New techniques employed at WVU Medicine make use of the latest technology to correct the long-time bane of the human foot: bunions.

Nov. 7, 2018 – Dr. Robert Santrock, chief of foot and ankle surgery at West Virginia University Medicine, was featured in an article and accompanying video on about Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™. Dr. Santrock noted that, until recently, surgical correction of a bunion involved either shaving off the bump or cutting and shifting the bones so it can look like the bump went away.  Neither approach addresses the root cause of bunions, which is an unstable joint toward the middle of a patient’s foot.   The Lapiplasty® Procedure involves realigning the bones back into their natural position in all three […]

Study Of Triplane Bunion Correction System Shows Strong Results After One Year

September 2018 – Multicenter clinical data presented at the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society annual meeting demonstrated that Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™ is effective in correcting bunions in three planes. The average time for bearing weight following surgery was 10.5 days and at an average 13.5 month follow up, 96.7 percent of patients maintained three-plane correction. Study coauthor Paul Dayton, DPM, FACFAS notes the Lapiplasty® Procedure can help the surgeon correct the bunion deformity at the anatomic apex, resulting in more complete correction. He says the system provides simultaneous triplane correction and offers “very consistent and reproducible” results. Reference Link: […]

August 22, 2018 – Vero Beach, FL – Dr. David Haile, a podiatrist based in Sebastian, Fla., provided expert insight in a story on foot pain. Dr. Haile explained how bunions are formed and that the unsightly “bump” associated with bunions is actually the normal head of the metatarsal – the bone behind the big toe – but in the wrong place. He notes that the previous surgical method of correcting bunions, shaving off the bump, is not an ideal solution and prefers Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™. Reference Link –

Summer Sandal Safety

Dr. Damian Roussel of the Centers for Advanced Orthopedics in Frederick, Maryland appeared on the Good Day DC program to discuss the drawbacks of wearing sandals and flip slops, such as unstable anatomical support, increased risk of infection, and the development of hammertoes and bunions. Speaking about bunion treatments, Dr. Roussel indicated that a conservative approach is the first step but that many deformities need surgical correction. Lapiplasty® Procedure at WVU Medicine: An innovative approach to bunion surgery

June 15, 2018 – WVU Medicine orthopaedic surgeon, Robert Santrock MD, explains an innovative method of treating bunions called Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion CorrectionTM. According to Dr. Santrock, “Bunions are not a cosmetic problem. They are a mechanical deformity which have, traditionally, not been treated in a very sophisticated way. Traditionally, bunions have been treated in a non-sophisticated way … we’ve been basically ‘knocking the bump off’ or we’ve taken the bone and cut it in half and shifted it over to make it look like the bump is gone, but it’s not really corrected the problem at all.” The Lapiplasty® […]
